So I'll double click the Unreal Gold icon in the start menu, and the
intro screen shows up. I wait a few moments; nothing. Wait some
more; still nothing.

Ctrl-alt-del. There's nothing in programs. Check services. There it
is! Why is it in services?

I'm using XP. It ran only a few months ago.

I have upgraded my video card since then, installed new drivers, but
haven't reinstalled DirectX.

Just now uninstalled Unreal, then tried to reinstall, and got nothing.

UT plays fine. I even copied my Unreal maps over to play, then found
I'd messed with the .int files until I'd lost Oldschool (skool?)
single player, and can't figure how to get it back.

Oh, well, least I can play it on my spare computer at my parent's
house (the one I built for my neices and nephews). At least I hope I
can; the game's crashing at a certain point. Probably a corrupted map
file. And the disk was at my apartment.
