Guys, I RMA'ed a 7900GS a bit back and in the meanwhile bought an 8600GT.
The performance is fairly equal so I have a brand new 7900GS that I got back
from XFX that I probably wont use. If anyone wants it, let me know and we
can work something out. The early 7900 series had bad chinese memory, but
this is a new run card with replaced memory. Oh, it's PCI too.

I wish I would have seen this when you posted it. I've been on an upgrade
rampage for the last 8 or 9 weeks. A 7900 GS would have been perfect for
what I did for my sons computer. I settled on an 8600 GT for him. I would
have been just as happy giving him a 7900GS.

Which GT did you get for yourself?

I've been feeling like a kid at Christmas with hardware prices right now.
As soon as I settle on a new keyboard, my new machine will be complete and I
can get back to being miserly with my technology budget.

I'd have to check to be sure but I *think* it's an MSI (the 8600). It was my
experience that in equal boxes the 7900GS is a better performing card over
the 8600GT. You get DX10 with the 8 series but for raw power and oomph, the
7900GS was the clear winner. Not to mention it overclocks like a madman,
which I hadn't even done yet.

If I still had it you would be welcome to it. I gave it away after a bit. If
it werent for the occasinal Crysis and Gears play I'd have swapped back and
kept the 79. Best card for the money I've ever had.

That's been a real trick the last few months. Balancing price and
performance with so many different video cards on the market isn't easy.
That 7900 was no doubt a nicely powerful card for its price tag.

I see nVidia just released their 9600s. When the initial release surge
settles down, those will probably become the new price to 'oomph' sweet
spot. I read a couple of sites benchmarks and that card seems to be a good
choice for any game based on the new unreal engine.

I don't know if I made a fiscally responsible decision for the card in my
new rig, but I couldn't be much more pleased with the performance. I bought
a G92 8800 GTS (an MSI, BTW). It really doesn't have much advantage over
the G92 8800 GT if the GT is overclocked... just a few extra stream
processors. I could have saved 75 bucks or so, I think. But, now I'm
playing Crysis @ 1680X1050 with AA and I don't have to tweek my video card
to do it. If any other titles come along in the next year that have the
same kind of system requirments, I may end up deciding I made the better
choice.
