Some people never quit playing and have gotten *very* good.  And, the cheat
community is much smaller than the UT community. Don't assume any cheating
is happening, but try to stick to actively adminned servers and you won't
have to worry about it much.  I don't know your geographical location, but
check out the multiplay.co.uk servers.  The admins there are well known and
very good at what they do.  Past that, most clan servers are actively
adminned.  You'll just have to look around and find active servers and then
chat a bit to find out who the admins are.

I don't know what the psychology is behind what makes different people enjoy
different types of gameplay. Personally, I more or less stick to straight
DM, but most of the people I play with/against also seem to like CTF or TDM.
 Why?  You'll probably have to see if there is some sort of a psych study
about things like that at maybe one of the major universities.

Again, No one can tell you why other people think or feel differently than
you do.  You can delve into psych books, I suppose.  I have to say that I
always hated insta because it doesn't require as much precision.  Hit
another player anywhere in the hit box and they explode...  With a sniper
rifle, you have to be quite precise in the hit box to make a one shot kill.
With something like the pulse, you have to stay in the hit box for more than
one short click, so you need to aim in the opponents hitbox for a longer
period of time while they try to 1) not allow you to kill them, and 2)
attempt to kill you.  - etc etc etc.  Why you see insta differently than I
do is a mystery but also very cool in the fact that people act and feel
differently from each other about everything.

I guess if I was looking for servers to play, that might annoy me too.  I
never noticed that server join redirects happened before a passworded server
required credentials for join.  -  Anyway, in a few weeks, you'll probably
have a few servers saved to favorites and it won't matter any more.
