Ego size.  That and today's equipment is capable of rendering decent
quality at speeds that high.

You could reduce the fps far lower than 100, like the mid 40 range
(performance hit from rendering a better image) and your eye wouldn't
notice a huge speed difference, but people have an aversion to low fps
=)
