I already have the original games in boxes, but still picked up these fully updated download versions. The games run fine in Windows8 by the way. -- Noman

I guess that could lead to one of those tired old debates on whether you believe logging into the Steam client constitutes DRM despite all the advantages, or whether or not you believe the freedom to not log in is worth paying twice as much from a company that hoaxed their customers into believing they were going out of business. But, it's been done here many times before, so I don't think I will.

It doesn't have to be a debate, if people are willing to accept that other people value different things and don't need to be converted to some other view. I happen to want to be able to play some of my GOG games at times when I don't have consistent internet access; I accept that my son prefers Steam and has good reason to do so. > But, it's been done here many times before, so I don't think I will. Sigh, Rin, of course you realize you've just done it. Or did you seriously think the rest of us flamers would let you get the last word? ;)

I have no problem with folks preferring to buy on GOG, if that's what they choose. I've said that before as well. > I happen to want to be able to play some of my >GOG games at times when I don't have consistent internet access; See below, that requirement about Steam is a myth. >I accept that my son prefers Steam and has good reason to do so. > >> But, it's been done here many times before, so I don't think I will. > >Sigh, Rin, of course you realize you've just done it. But, whatever you do, look alive and realize that logging into Steam does not equal the need to be online, then go on about whatever you want in the space here. Here, last word space for rent... knock yourself out. I mostly chimed in on this thread because usually when JL mentions a GOG deal, he will say "but it's still $XX on Steam", without realizing that it has been on sale for half the GOG price about three times on average over the last six months on Steam, and that the only DRM present is dependent on what the publisher decided to impose at the time (not Valve). That's not a tired old debate. It's stating facts then leaving them where they lay.

You can't re-install those games, without having internet access and an access to Steam server. You can't have two different games purchased on Steam running on two different PCs at the same time, unless you carefully manage offline mode, which itself has its issues. You can't give the game you purchase to someone else unless you share your account details with them. I don't want to continue this debate either, but insisting that Steam is not a DRM and then declaring it as a fact is more than a bit idiotic. -- Noman

Proof that this is a myth has been well-documented in recent threads here. If you're interested in the truth, it's not too far out of reach. But that's your call.

And the GOG versions come with ALL available extra goodies... soundtracks etc. For my large collection of classic PC games, finally the total freedom from either the Steam umbilical or (copy-protected) CD/DVD installs is so refreshing. I keep all my GOG install-files on a desktop USB3.0 drive (and archived elsewhere)... lightning fast installs. Just one download of each game + its extras... done. No need to log-on to some junk umbilical website like Steam/Impulse/Gamersgate/Origin/etc to re-install or play. Install anywhere at any time. If the game has an MP mode, the key is provided. > from a company that hoaxed their >customers into believing they were going out of business. > Still flogging that dead horse? This is where the myth comes in, and where an understanding and acceptance of the truth versus myth comes in handy. You don't have to "log into a website" or even have an active Internet connection to run Steam. I know "you can't handle the truth", but there it is. If the game does require that, it is a choice of the publisher and not Valve. But if you'd like to continue to buy games from a company that pranks their customers, please do feel free.. It gives me more reason to laugh at you :)

The Steam log-in comes up..damn, forgot to log-in and/or set Steam to off -line mode. Now, where did store my log-in and password? Sorry, I don't auto log-in. Security issue, you know. Of course, if one auto- logins or has (previously logged-in to) set off-line mode, then I suppose you can live in the alternate reality that the Steam umbilical does not exist. Have you applied for a job with Valve? Your technical and marketing ability should find you a slot in the company with remuneration and bonuses suitably aligned with your current wealth. And Bellevue is a beautiful area, with all sorts of recreation close by. Skiing, climbing and hiking in the Cascades, boating and fishing in the lakes or in Puget Sound and the San Juan islands.
