So I played the demo of Dark Messiah and thought it was kind of lack luster
at best. Obvious puzzles, too easy to be a little good at everything, and
not great at a few things. Oblivion has this problem as well. You can't be
a Super Thief ala Garrett, but you can be an intimidating Stealth
Spellcasting Ranger.

Anyway, by in large my biggest hang up on Dark Messiah is Steam. I am
adamantly opposed to installing 3rd party software to play something I
legally purchased. Plus, where I'm not 12 years old and have a full time
job that I also use my computer for, the last thing I want is a game service
running full time on my computer looking for patches. I realize you can
shut it off, but that's beside the point.

According to the box you only need Steam during install (if you don't plan
to play MP) to verify the software. So my question is, can I install this
game, then uninstall Steam and still play it SP? And by uninstall, I'm
talking of digging through the registry to remove all traces of Valve's
little demon-child of an idea from existence.

Also, I've heard alot about Gothic but I've never seen/played it. Most
recently in an Arx post on here. It's not MMORPG is it? Anyone care to
give me a synopsis and maybe compare it with a few similar games? I guess
I'm wondering if someone who likes Thief and Arx Fatalis would probably
enjoy Gothic.

Thanks for any help you can give

Hi Loony, welcome back, haven't read from you in aaages. Was that 2004 or something?

Why not email tech support and tell them their little proggie totally effed up your machine and you wanna make sure you're rid of it and ask them for all the registry entries to manually remove.
It worked for me for PrevX when it stopped my comp cold a few years ago. Although PrevX was basically overzealous by miles their support was really good and they sent me complete manual uninstall key list.

Can't see what would stop you from playing SP but then, what do I know what they programmed it to do.

Have a good one mate,

BARNABY

Yeah, been a real long time.

I found it hard to be here and not take personal offense to the attacks and
rudeness, plus I was playing more action games than stealthy ones, so I just
didn't have much to talk about here. For some reason I find it hard to get
into FMs. It's like watching student films to me. Good, and impressive in
the amount of work to make them, but still not as tight or fun as the
originals. And part of that is probably that I'm a gamer for the story,
and you just can't put that much story into a single FM. What I mean is if
I had taken even the best of the OMs alone without the context of the rest
of the game, I probably would've been equally unmoved. And yes, I tried
many of the now classics.

So anyway, thanks for the suggestion about contacting them directly and
asking how to remove the steam stuff. Definitely worth a look :)

Cheers,
Loony

I played the SP of Dark Messiah, my biggest hang up is it is way too
short, anyway, I never installed Steam and had no problems playing it.

That's long past, it only happened for a short while back then for whatever reason, but it's actually been very civil since that low. Might also have something to do with not much going on here anymore since TDS, only interrupted perhaps by a flurry when T2x was released to the community. Now we only have the occasional posts re fm's or new games that are perceived as related, Thief inspired and so on.

Ok, but have you tried the T2x, a game and story in itself although you need T2 to install it on, or Christine Schneiders mission sets? They might come closer to what you expect, I hope.

Have fun and don't be a stranger, it's a very nice and helpful group here. Although I haven't been playing anything for a long time sometimes drop by as well, old habit I guess.

Take care,
BARNABY

Never installed Steam at all? Now that is interesting! I might have to buy
it after all (when it comes down to $10 of course. Loony needs his grocery
money :)
