Why should I play Thief 2?

Ok, I played Thief 1 and really enjoyed it although it was rather
hard. I had to do lots of reloading because of my tendency to blunder
around a lot. Also, I tended to not use my arsenal because it was
limited and I worried there would be a spot later on in the mission
where I might really need it and I ended up not using anything.

I just started up Thief:DS and was ready to go but part of me wants to
play Thief 2 first. Why don't I play it? Because I've heard it's
*hard* . Persuade me, give me tips, whatever *g*

Thanks!

Thief 2 is my favorite I guess. Maybe that's because it has the most Fan
Missions made for it (400+) and I've just played it the most. Maybe it's
because it has a few more weapons and items for Garrett to use. Maybe
it's because the graphics are a bit better than Thief 1. Probably it's a
mixture of all those things. I don't think it's any harder than Thief 1
though. Maybe my skills were just better by the time I played T2. I know
that I just scoff and laugh at situations in Thief now that would have
scared the crap out of me back when I was starting with Thief 1.

Anyhow, yes you should play it. Then install Darkloader or Garrettloader
and start feasting on all the hundreds of fan missions available to you. I
wish I could go back and start playing them again for the first time. They
are what make Thief great, not the original campaigns, IMNSHO.*

Thief 3...well, it's fun to play once. Eric Brosius' ambient music makes
some parts very nice. But if you're used to the real Thief games you
might be annoyed by Thief 3.

You can get fan missions here:
http://thiefmissions.com/ and http://www.keepofmetalandgold.com/
and you can discuss them here:

Yea, what he said. :-) Anyway, definitely play Thief 2. I don't even
remember much of Thief at all. But there are plenty of Thief 2 Fan
Missions. Some good and some not so good.

It's no harder than Thief 1 and the game sequence trains you up in the
various skills in a nice progression. The graphics look much better
than Thief1.

Personally I prefer it to Thief 1 or Thief 3, but there is a lot of
debate about which is the best!. Most of the Fan Missions being
produced now are for TMA rather than TDP or TDS.

I recommend playing it before you play TDS to maintain the story
sequence.

Don't worry about arsenal, there's more than enough for you to
complete the priary objective.

Thief 2 is slightly easier after you've played through Thief 1 - you
know exactly how to play. On "Normal", the first map gives tutorials
on the basic gameplay so that you can at least clear the path.

The map design is generally meant to make it easier for the player to
complete the maps without running into too much difficulty - less tile
floors, more paths within a building, etc. There are somethings that
you will need to watch out for - but you'll find out soon enough.

As with Thief 1, there is at least one "point-of-no-return" where the
map becomes extremely difficult when you pass through a certain area.
While there is an "out" in this case, there's a very high chance of
failure - thankfully, you aren't required to enter that area.

I knew you all would persuade me *g*. I did have most of the links you
mentioned except the Keep of Metal and Gold. I'll give it a shot...I'm
a bit rusty. It's been three years since I played the original Thief
but hopefully it will be like riding a bike. Oh and I showed some
stuff from T:DS to my husband (the first part of the walkthrough with
Garrett's Notebook) and he's tempted to play now. He's a flight sim
person but he said he could use the humor :)

Thanks!

Celeste

P.S. I find the graphics still hold up fairly well...then again, it's
the gameplay that holds up :)

My favorite missions in Thief 1 were the Lost City and the one with the Fire
Elementals flying around everywhere. I need to go back and play that again,
as soon as I finish with TDS.

My daughter lauged at me when I was playing Thief 1 for the first time.
Because I was leaning over in my chair trying to look around the corner....

My fav is the Thieve's Den mission you get with Thief Gold. It's also the
one I get lost in. I don't usually get lost in Thief missions.

Huh? What about the watchers and robots that are in Thief 2? The Bank
mission is way harder than anything in Thief 1 as is Sabotage at Soulforge.
You need a walkthru for that one.

Worst thing about fan missions is having to start without any weapons. Or
they drop you into the mission with a guard right near you so you have to
scramble to a hiding spot right off the bat with no weapons. Or there are 9
scrolls to read before you actually get into the action.

True, some fan missions are like that, but not all of them. The
Christine series of FM's is just as good if not better then the original
missions.
After trial and error, you know which FM makers games to play and
which to avoid.

Thief 2 is waaay better than T:DS, that's why you want to play it first. :-)

Seriously, T2 has got a better story. If you like thiefing and burgaling,
exploring and finding secrets, you won't find much of it in T:DS. There is a
hell of a lot more exploring you can do vs. the limited linear levels of T:DS.

You won't have to deal with the hub-based city of T:DS, where you end up being a
messenger boy criss-crossing the same city a dozen times throughout the game.

Your armaments are much better in T2.

There is no "faction/politics" crap to deal with in order to get through the
game--- you get to be Garrett- Master Thief, not a sappy politicking pawn. If
you don't align with factions in T:DS, then the boredom of criss-crossing the
city/hub becomes a (nearly pointless) "avoid the bad guys" type of game.
Definitely not Thiefing at all. Not when you have to do the same thing over and
over.

And once you're done with T2, then head over to thief2x.com and download the
free expansion. 13 new levels, new graphics, sounds, objects, characters,
creatures, and a cool story.

With all of the Thief story under your belt, THEN slog through T:DS. The thing
worth looking forward to there is The Cradle level. There rest just ain't Thief.

Yes, I sound negative and jaded because I'm a huge Thief fan, and T:DS was a
huge letdown for me. It was too much like Deus Ex 2, a Gabe Newell abomination.

The Christine missions are great. Another complaint is the guards who have
helmets on. You sneak up and hit them and clang the noise alerts his
buddies. That's why I save every 30 seconds when playing a fan mission.
Around the next corner will be a guard carrying a lantern!!! There goes your
hiding spot!

Yeah, I like it when you can get different groups of NPCs to fight like
that. Do they normally just argue and then sulk? I always shoot an arrow

No, eventually one side will say something about the other side's noble or

Thief 2 is the best of the series, but T:DS has the best level of any game
I've ever played, The Shalebridge Cradle. It's worth playing the whole game
just for this.
Make sure you take a dump before playing said level, you've been warned.

I enjoyed the Bank one, but gave up trying to finish Soulforge after I

I found the making of mines to be a bit annoying especially having to

I did snap the CD for Iron Storm.

Robots and watchers are taken out with either water arrows or fire
arrows. They are also slower than normal guards - while they may
chase you around, they won't be able to do it over long distances.

They also make fire arrows useful.

As long as the large robot has its back to you then 2 water arrows will do
it in. I used to sneak up from behind and while pressing the W key blackjack
them. It takes 18 whacks to dispose of them but now just use 2 water arrows.
It's so much less stressfull. Sometimes one fire arrow is not enough
depending on the mission maker.

It's the only mission I had to play on easy mode. Even then I had to
consult the walkthru for what to do first and then second etc.

It wasn't helped by a bug that messed up the map so that it was very
difficult to tell where you were. That was fixed in a patch,
fortunately.
