...are just too damn tough!

They're so strong it unbalanced the game IMHO. They just had too many things
going for them:

1 They're fast
2 They're deadly
3 They're very alert
4 They walk around in pairs
5 They can apparently see in the dark better than any other creature
6 They can even see THROUGH some things (a big rock, a big tree in a dark
place, even a cell door!)
7 They're classed as "anyone" (as in "'Don't kill anyone" in Expert mode)
rather than merely murderous monsters.

I ended up giving up on that particular FM. I've played many, including lots
of tough ones but this one I just found way too infuriating.

Despite my misgivings I still much enjoyed the FM and then part four of the
L'Arsene series restored my faith.

It' s true, not the easiest mission, but also not the hardest. It's
doable, remember it's a sneaking game and you can get quite far with
avoiding them or killing their patrols from far away, picking them off one
by one from behind.

Although they seem to be able to see everything they don't, and there is a
way to complete it. That said, it is one of those missions where I saved
*a lot*.

Have fun.

Is that a recent one? I don't think I have played it yet.

Except that in Expert mode you're not allowed to kill them at
all...otherwise that would have been my tactic.

Oh yeah, thought I gotta keep my options open with these murderous little
buggers.
Is it your aim to play all FM's on Expert?

I usually do that except if there is a "don't blackjack the guards"
requirement.

Anyhow, you know there is a cheat that lets you bypass the do not kill
requirement, right? For those times when you absolutely have to kill
every muther in the mission.

Yep!

Although, I think, having got my fingers burned with The Korrigans I started
The Den on 'Hard' (but then the only difference at the start was the amount
of loot to steal and I easily passed that).

In a few games where keeping someone alive is a goal, it won't work, but
generally if you edit your user.cfg file and add these two lines, you'll
see that the no kill option is disabled.

Did you try the Dark Messiah demo? It seems like it will have a much
better "Thief" aspect to it. Comes out on the 24th in the US.

The demo for Dark Messiah is nice. A bit short, but nice.
I still need to go rent Oblivion, but haven't had time to do that yet.

Oblivion is a nice game. You might hear me rag on it in csipgr but
overall I liked it. I just hope they can build on what was good in it and
add a better plot for the next game in the series.

I wish it would have started different....after all, in Morrowind,
you started out as a prisoner, and Deja vue....also in Oblivion.
They very easily could have waited until you had a few levels
experience, then have you arrested, either for a reason or
trumped up charges. Then have the main quest dumped
in your lap.
If the game wasn't so good, I could easily get back to
the Thief 2 FMs I'm working on. And now Dark Messiah
has been mentioned.
