This is the unofficial _Thief: The Dark Project_ NG dedicated to Looking
Glass Studios great game.
I look forward to discussions about this great game, concerning everything
about the actual gameplay as well as hardware/driver issues.

I, the creator of this group, has played the game for the last 6 days and
have completed level 4 on hard difficulty. I play the game on a P166 MMX
oc'ed to 2.5*75@187 Mhz with 64 MB SDRAM, an old matrox mystique 4 MB, and a
monster 3d Voodoo I with reference drivers. It runs just great!

My favourite level is 'down in the bonehoard' - I look forward to playing it
on expert - as it had an incredible Lovecraft-like ambience. I especially
liked the burricks just standing there in the giant cave of Quintus' Family,
not moving.

Best Wishes,

Troels

Yep, it, Cragsleft Prison and Lost City are best levels, IMHO

well, i've only played to level 6, but "The Sword" had some great ideas.
*POSSIBLE SPOILER*

i mean, how cool was that hallway with the illusion of perspective! i
flipped when i saw how kick-ass that level was. in any role-playing or
live role-playing game, i _am_ garret, except i go by the name maendark.
;) this game fulfills that desire heh

I suggest you take up playing with the mouse (to control the direction you
look), it's a much more flexible way of playing. The way I like to play is
basically run forward/walk back/strafe left/strafe right on the arrow keys,
all my weapon selection on the numerical keypad, jump on my right mouse
button, attack on the left and walk forward on the END key above the UP ARROW
key. I always try to keep all the main keys in the area around the arrows so
I don't have to move my left hand a lot.

hope this helps

Joystick-mouse is the best control I have used, and would be, if I
didn't already have a good one, my new religion. In fact I have been
winning converts (to joystick-mouse control).

A good stick allows "walk", "run", and several directions of diagonal
strafe, plus buttons for jump and duck, primary and secondary fire,
hatswitch for weapon/item selection/use, and stick twist for "vertical
strafe" where applicable. Circle-strafe? Sure, now you can move
anywhere while keeping your aim in one direction. Have employed
successfully in several current FPS games.

I will definitely wait for configurable joystick support prior to picking
up Thief.

Meanwhile, I'd like to find out how convincing/effective the whole
"stalking" concept turned out. Opinions? Back in my D&D days
I was always the thief, and wished that playing that part was as cool
as it ought to be if it could work.

I applaud them for their choice in default. I'm willing to bet it was
chosen since it is approx. the most popular Quake/Quake II
configuration - look, attack with the mouse, and of course WASD
my jump is even E, I got lucky.
It's an insanly realistic way to play, and adds a lot to the
excitment. the mouse is your head, basically. and the keyboard your
feet.
