First, I'm not sure that switch is required with T2 (I don't recall
using it in win2k).

Second, the problem of immediately crashing back to the desktop is
often a result of the videos not playing correctly. There is an easy
way to check this. Open the file cam.cfg using notepad and add a line
to the end of this file. The contents of this line should be
"skip_intro" (without the quote marks). Save and close the file.

Try to launch the game again. If you make it to the menu, try viewing
the intro or credits. At that point, I suspect you'll crash back to
the desktop again.

If this goes as I predicted, you probably have a problem with the
Intel Indeo codecs that are used to play the in-game movies. Possibly
they are not installed at all.

Put your Thief 2 disc in and look for a file called iv5play.exe. Run
this to install the codecs. If it still doesn't work, you might try
downloading and installing the latest version of the Indeo codecs
(search the web).

I once had a problem where the codecs seemed to be corrupted, but
refused to re-install because they were already installed (why do
people make installation programs do stupid things like that?). The
solution to this was too complicated to explain in detail. Basically I
had to track down the files for the codec and delete them (actually, I
just renamed them), then run the installer. When I did this I actually
deleted a few files that I shouldn't have, so I had to restore those
after (I could tell because the installation didn't re-create those
files).

If you can't resolve the problem by fixing the codecs (or if it
crashes without you ever seeing the menu, after adding skip_intro in
cam.cfg), then my next suggestion is to reinstall DirectX. You might
run through the tests in the DirectX Diagnostic tool first to see if
it finds any problems. You can get to that by running dxdiag from the
"Run" command in your start menu.
