I'm going to pick up Starcraft. Don't plan to spend too much time with it
but wanted to experience one of the best pc games.

If, however, I decide to jump online and play a bit how important is the
Brood Wars expansion pack? If I don't have it will there still be enough
competition out there playing the basic maps?

Thanks.

You'll definitely want Brood War. The additional units are a must for
play balance.

Yeah you will definitely want it.

If you tell someone you play starcraft and they want to play with you
they will expect you to have BW.

You want it, simply because no one serious plays vanilla SC, and
vanilla SC isn't really balanced either in terms of gameplay. But if
you're just casually 'checking the game out', I guess it doesn't
matter - while there's still no end to shitty players on b.net, you
should still take note that even the more shitty ones who play
SeriousCraft and not UMS or Mucho Money gayness have played the game
for several years, so the stepping level for a total newbie might feel
ridiculously high and hopelessly intimidating.

As for maps, good luck finding random SeriousCraft games on anything
else than Lost Temple or Luna on B.net.
Well, I guess with a little luck you just might get something going on
one of the other more popular current WGT maps (Tau
Cross/Longinus/Python), but that's unfortunately pretty rare unless
you hang out in channels among like-minded peeps.
