As you probably know, I'm looking for work as a programmer, but as
everybody wants someone with experience (that I'm struggling to get),
I've been forced to do temporary work (short term contracts, not really
doing what I want to do) to keep the money coming in. Just in case
you're wondering, I do have enough money to get by (so you wont be
seeing the back of me :-p).

Anyways I'll be moving out of where I am shortly (and loosing the 2mbs
cable connection that I have access to) and will probably go with a
wireless provider (simply for the flexibility, as I can't guarantee
staying in any one place for too long (most wired broadband plan's
require a 12 month contract here, and have a reconnection fee)), which
doesn't have a news server. My question is, is there any good, cheap
(preferably free) news servers that I can hook into (Google and other
web based systems are not an option)? I'd rather have complete control
over the newsgroups I see.

If I choose not to get broadband (I think that will be a mistake!), I
won't have an issue.

Just a word of warning, I have created a bot that currently records all
that goes on here (and some day may post here as well (AI bug strikes
again!)).

Or don't get one at all (not until you've got a stable income that is). You
won't die without internet and trust me, you won't miss anything even if you
come back after 10 years.

*shrug* I use APN because it's cheap. $3/month gets you 7 GB/month,
it's very fast, and retention is pretty good.

I looked for a while but was unable to find any free news server that
had any groups that I wanted. You might find one if you look
better/longer than I did, but the pay ones are cheap enough that I
didn't want to bother. Plus, you'll never find a free one with binary
access and most of them are fairly slow.

Unfortunately it won't work quite like that. I need Internet access as
it is a great aid for my job hunt. The real question is weather my 56k
modem is still up to the job (and if I can handle the speed it pumps out).

There's still enough to go around, it's just that entering is a little

Oh so true. I finished my degree about 3 years ago (when there were a
few too many of us). Nowadays (certainly from my experience (in
Wellington, NZ at least)) there is a shortage, but they don't want to
train anyone new (the old adage of to get experience, you must first
have experience).

Just out of curiosity Spyda, where are you focusing your job hunt (or is
it everywhere)? I've focused on the Wellington Region (being that I'm
currently in Lower Hutt).

That is exactly what I feel the candidates must have (experience) even
though when I start up on this forsaken career in IT, I was once a fresh
graduate. Well at least now I can do upon those whom did not do anything
against me .... MUHAHAAHA!

Worse yet are those so-called "friends" who, gloating and lording over
us with their bandwidth supremacy deluge us poor "dialies" with assorted

I must agree, I can't could how many e-mails I had that were over 1
meg, while on dial-up (5 mins + to download). I don't believe I've ever

In all fairness many people don't know the size of an email, or even have a
general idea that multimedia is bigger than text. Maybe if they thought
about it, but they aren't pondering the world and the universe they are just
forwarding something interesting/unique in their opinion.

One was a Powerpoint slide that was work related (5 meg - put it in PDF
