giant heatsink thing off, but heat is already a huge concern anyway so I
leave it. . . grrr
3. 120 GB
4. 512 MB
5. E-VGA NVidia Geforce 5500
6. 128 MB ?
7. 600$

Is your pricing excluding the monitor?

1. Intel :p
2. 2.66Mhz (no overclock as I prefer stability over speed)
3. 160GB
4. 1.5Gig
5. Gigabyte ATI Radeon
6. 128MB

Mine is without monitor and costs approx US 600 also (what a rip off)

Must be a crappy anceint mobo. I would say you could get one that
supports 200 mhz fsb for like $50, but it'd really suit you better
just to upgrade to a new mobo with athlon 64.

Yes, but if you change mobo, you would normally have to change almost
everything, except for hard disk, floppy (who on earth still use this!?),
cdr/w

Processor, RAM and display - those are the two things that are costly

It's like replacing the mini cooper with a Ferrari engine ?

Actually I've recently upgraded my PC (from Athlon XP 1700 - not overclock
but keeps crashing due to overheat) and I'm re-using my 17" Flat screen CRT.

LCD monitor looks cooler though.

Err, the mini cooper is pretty cool, and ferrari engines are
overrated. A Honda 2.5L turbocharged on a small enough frame can do
0-60 in 1.3 seconds. Pretty f'ing cool, but I digress...

A new motherboard & processor would work just fine with the current
video card & ram, and a pretty damn decent athlon /w mobo combo can be
gotten for $200-$300. Careful to either get an agp mobo, or a
pci-express with a new video card. I'm not sure if combo
agp/pci-express motherboards exist(it's quite possible) but I've not
seen them in the slew of high-end mobo reviews I've read.

Ah... old school...

So... just get a $20 hsf cooler and the athlon is salvaged? Those
older (thoroughbred) athlons ran like hot mothers with stock coolers.
Mine regularly ran above 70 C, and occasionally dipped close to 80 in
the summer. That's when I had to turn the thing off and do something
else for half an hour. My new Barton, however, runs at 2.1 GHz
overclocked below 60 almost all the time. At idle, it's around 55, and
gets up to about 62 during max cpu util. Stock cooler, nothing fancy.

>LCD monitor looks cooler though.

Sort of... I really liked my CRT 17", looked absolutely brilliant, but
I thought it would be nice to have more room for stuff in my fairly
cramped dorm room, and my dad had an extra LCD monitor either to go to
me or my brother, so I scooped it up. I'm fairly pleased with it,
though I still don't think the picture is quite as good as my CRT Dell
trinitron.

It works okay and I guess on average everyone is using a 128MB for their

When your company gives you your annual bonus your hand tends to be a little
bit itchy. Secondly the old fart has served me well and lately it keeps
hanging - not to mention it cannot run newer and cooler 3D games like Prince
of Persia, Doom III etc

Your dad wouldn't happen to have another spare 21" LCD monitor, does he? :p

Not sure but probably close to $1000 (similar new computers sell for
around $1500 NZD)

I'm rather worried as I brought this about 2 years ago, and still see
that it (in some cases, more than) competes to the other computers I see
listed. My next machine will have the Athlon X64 dual core and be using
a SATA Hard drive (which I may chuck in this computer first). The
weakest link in this machine is the Video card though.

This wasn't supposed to be my computer.

I built it for my niece - for to help her in school. Stipulation was that
she got to keep it as long as she didn't stay it school.

It came back to me.

I sold my computer to my aunt to pay some bills - thinking I would rebuild
it soon. But I never did.

This computer is fine. I don't play computer games anyway so I don't need
much.

Yes but do you really need those features (eg. SATA)

Not currently. This machine is more than capable of doing everything
that I need it to. In future though, I'm looking at writing some more
CPU and memory intensive programs (multi user, deformable landscape
anyone?). Being that RAM is limited to 2GB on a 32 bit machine, I expect
to need a lot more space, and need a decent speed HD for swap (in saying
that, my Pagefile is close to 850mb now - my machine could use a little
tuning).

EEK. It was mid to low end when I built this machine (~$250 NZD, ~$150
USD). Looking back over the others I see Luc has a Geforce 5500 (I'd say
it comparable) and Zealot has and ATI 9600 (isn't that better?).

Heh... I set up my swap file to span accross all 3 of my internal
drives and to take up 6-10GB. Add in 1.5GB of RAM OC'd to 360 MHz DDR
(from 333) and it keeps things pretty speedy. And the limit for 32-bit
is 4GB; 2GB is likely dependent on your motherboard.

Maybe it's common accross a number of motherboards. I don't recall
seeing the 4Gb limit anywhere, but it does make sense (2^32 = 4 Gb).

That's what I thought, but couldn't confirm, due to my lack of graphics

All of them are midrange cards except the 5200 which is even slower than an
MX 440 hence a piece of hud

Thank God I've got a good CPU then. My computer runs Battlefield 2 quite
nicely. I did try to run a F.E.A.R. demo, and well, even when I dialed
everything down as low as possible, it still stuttered at an unplayable
rate.

BF2 is pretty CPU intensive... detail dialed down it doesn't have very
high video card reqs. FEAR ran at barely playable (~20fps most of the
time) at medium-ish detail settiings, and ran smoothly at lower ones.
And from what I've heard, FEAR is very demanding on your vid card,
although the amount of detail changes drastically depending on whether
you use a dx 7, 8, or 9 enabled card especially for dynamic lighting
and 'haze' effects. (the GF 4x00 MX series was 7, GF 4x00 FX series
was 8, 5x00 was mostly 8, higher end 6x00 & 7x00 are 9. For ATI below
9500 is 7, 9500 & above is 8, x series is 9)

Is the game FEAR good? With such demanding graphics it better be!

Actually software is more expensive than hardware.

1. Mickeysoft Windows XPee Pro costs approx US 135
2. Mickeysoft Office XPee Pro costs approx. US 475
3. Mickeysoft Visio costs approx. US 475
4. Adobe Photoshop CS 2 ????
etc??

That amount may not be much to a westerner but convert that to the insane
Malaysian banana leaf currency RM 1.00 and you get a truck load of money
(exaggerated).

FEAR has awesome graphics with a sufficiently loaded PC, they decline
sharply as your PC specs do, however. As for gameplay, it's kinda
repetetive...

Student/Teacher edition is like $130 I think? You can get it MUCH less
than that.

Why would you want that? I could get it free through my CS club, but I
don't know what it does and I don't have any use for it.

I might venture into this if time permits.

The cost that you saved from the open license is not really that signficant.
You only need to buy one full pack with the cd installation+manual+box
casing etc and the rest is just a piece of e-paper which you can keep track
off Mickeysoft site.

Except that we as corporations are not able to buy the so called package

If you do lots of network/flowcharts etc Visio is definitely faster but I
have to admit that you can get it done using the Mickeysoft Office XPee. In
Visio if you need to move the flowchart of linked objects around just move
the object and the links will be automatically adjusted.

Yes there are everywhere but there are also abundant of copyright laws that
we as corporates need to abide, or we'll get our ass sued by BSA.

For a 80 users Novell client+server license, we need to spend UNITED STATES
DOLLAR SIX THOUSAND FOUR HUNDRED AND EIGHTY SIX (actual amount based on
latest quote).

Feel free, so long as your specs are up to it. (I'd recommend a better

I've seen it for about $50 less than the equivalent full boxed copy...
that's pretty significant, in my book. Only bummer with the OEM
license is that it's forever linked to a single motherboard.

Corporations?? Oh come on, Stephen, I thought you meant software that
you yourself had to pay for. Who cares about what corporations have to
pay for software? :)

www.dell.com.my and click on customize on any notebook

Microsoft(R) Office Small Business Edition 2003 (OEM Version) [+RM 839.00] =
US 220.79
Microsoft(R) Office Professional Edition 2003 (OEM Version) [+RM 1126.00] =
US 296.32

If we happen to change motherboard, we will call Mickeysoft and have it
re-activated. As long as we have one license to support the PC, it still
counts as a license. Yes, we are aware of how the copyright law works but
screw Mickeysoft. :-p

Secondly, it is not everyday that we have the motherboard changed.

Actually it is quite easy to learn. After all, you kinda get bored ordering
people around and you pretty much have some free time to yourself. whenever
I am in trouble I consult my friend (who is a graphic designer) but most of
the time is through self learning from the vast resources and tutorials, off
the net. Most of the tutorials have a very detailed step by step, which is
very easy to learn.

Most of the time I uses Adobe CS to create graphics for the director
presentation materials

They should come up with a third world country cost for that. We still live

Oh, don't be such a hypocrite. IIRC you're also using Mickeysoft instead of
Linux.

Blitzed. Our power "blipped" a couple of times today. PC did not
survive the second occurrence.

Fortunately, my homeowner's policy covers "replacement cost" (less
deductible, of course). Given the age of the PC (Win98SE), anything I
replace it with will be incredibly fast by comparison.

(I don't know whether to blame the power company or to thank them.)

Fortunately, back up laptop had battery power to handle the situation.

You need an ups mister.

And your insurance company is stupid if minus the deductible of current
value of your computer is enough to buy a newer better computer.

Most probably the only parts that needs to be replaced is the Power Supply
Unit

Smart UPS, even

You mean you guys have insurance for a computer?! What do you have on your
computer that is worth protecting?

Homeowners insurance covers lots of stuff... theft, sometimes natural
disasters, (apparently) electrical damage... I'd have thought the
power company would be liable if you can specify the time frame the
power spikes occured. What's on it that's worth protecting? The
computer itself is pretty expensive, usually...

Not really. Most of the time the PSU goes but not the MOBO

Normal UPS do not regulate the power but rather only provide as backup

I suppose it depends on what kind of computer you're trying to protect.
Servers, mainframes & minis for example are worth protecting. However most
of the time the thing that is worth protecting is data.

I use DVD-R's for those kind of backups!

It was on a surge protector strip. I always put any
electrical/electronics of any value on a surge strip.
