Personally I'd prefer for Blizzard to lay off the MMORPG thing for awhile ;) If you want to fish all day - the play WoW. Somehow I don't think life as an SCV collecting minerals all day would be so much of an improvement. Last I heard, they have ideas for Starcraft II - current technology just prevents it. We, the fans are left to speculate on what that means - and I suppose the statement itself may be a propeganda tactic. As for the next natural MMORPG . . . eh . . . not Diablo? Diablo is already halfway there. It will be a sad day when Blizzard forsakes all stand alone games in favor of pure MMORPG. My personal, humble, opinion that is, of course ;) I am not convinved that MMORPG adds a great deal of playability to a game. What it adds is a guarantee that the makers of the game will continue to add features, abilities and new quests. This is assured and funded through the subscriptions that the companies charge for whatever reason, which they market as the ability to play with and against other players. Would the game be exactly the same if all PCs were AIs - well no, of course not. My only point is that MMORPG shouldn't be considered the end all of every scenario. It has its place - but I would say, for the most part that place is filled. It's fun to play with friends but I don't really give a crap if I am in the same world as someone 900 miles away but in real life and in the game and he is doing some stupid thing that I will never know or care about. Did you hear Disney is returning to hand drawn animation? It's because the 3D animation fad is wearing off and people miss the basics. The same will happen. When games first went to 3D - game makers were more concerned about making their games 3D than making sure that they were playable - I remember those days in the early years of playstation for instance. There were still kick ass games, like FF VII - but they were more of a rarity than the common place. The MMORPG market is saturating. I think we can expect more "expansion packs" and the like from existing games and fewer new games coming out. There are just not enough people interested in MMORPG that are willing to leave their existing service, start new subscriptions or pay for two online game subscriptions. Do I think WOS would blow WOW out of the water? No :) But it's still always fun to dream. So um . . keep dreaming! -- LTP :)
