In any event, the problem is about the analysis of beliefs and when a belief involves the indexical, it appears that the indexical cannot be analyzed away. Here's a brief example. I believe that I am typing right now. It does not appear that this belief (B) is equivalent to the belief (B') that "I believe that Andrew is typing right now." Or, more accurately, if the two beliefs are equivalent, they are only equivalent because B' would suppose that I believe that I am Andrew, which reintroduces the indexical. Thus, the problem of the essential indexical. On a side note, John Perry wrote another article on structured procrastination.
