Of course they are. They're the highest ranked European team and #2
overall just behind Brazil. That doesn't mean USA's performance in the
game wasn't uncharacteristically pathetic (it was). They seriously
lacked energy and organization, and the Czech Republic took advantage
of it. If the USA was playing their top game, I still wouldn't be
surprised if they lost to Czech Republic, but I'd expect a closer
margin and some better playing.

That wouldn't make sense, as the winner of Group E (rather than the
runner up) wouldn't have to face Brazil at least until the final match
if ever.

You just said you thought USA couldn't beat Italy, which would
probably make Italy the runner up and knock USA out in the first
round. I think Brazil will beat whoever is the runner up so it doesn't
really even matter that much.

the final though.
