Same thing with chocolate, btw... (fair trade, exploitation, etc...) a
pretty big proportion of the growers come from central/west africa,
and a fairly large proportion of those use slaves and child slaves...
the ones that don't pay next to nothing. Compound this with the fact
that they use fast growing non-sustainable farming methods (chop down
some rainforest, plant the cocao, harvest for a couple years, move on
to another section of rainforest. Verus leaving shade trees, taking
longer for the cocao to mature, and being able to farm a section for
15+ years, after depletion crop cycling replenishes the soil...) and
it's a prety lame deal for the growers, and the corporations save a
couple bucks which they don't pass on to the customers...
