I still like byers explanation of a crackling better:

??: 1/3? Base unit
Ling: 2/3 Middle unit
Crackling: 3/3 Fully upgraded unit.

And if it was lings that started an attack, and cracklings that finished
it, then it was both, not either. Well, maybe more the cracklers.
Depends on what was happening before the upgrade came through. If the
Lings were struggling, and then the cracklings swept through, then it
was their victory. On the other hand if the Lings had already pretty
much decimated the defence capability of the enemy, and the cracklings
just finish it off, then it is a Ling victory...
