When I use the nailgun in Team Arena, I fire just one shot.  But when
an enemy bot uses it, I get blasted with dozens of nails that seems
like a continuous hail, like the chaingun.  What am I missing?

They're repeatedly firing.  Each shot fires a blast of nailguns, which 
spread out as they go downrange; when you're the one shooting, it's less 
obvious that they spread out as much as they do.  When you're being shot 
at, especially from someone who's at medium-to-long range, it just looks 
like a huge shower of nails.  They're not cheating, you're just on the 
receiving end and they're shooting a lot.
