Noob alert

Been playing all the Quake games for years but never got into the whole
graphics tweaking side. My new Q4 forced the purchase of a new card, a PNY
verto 6600 w/ 256MB. Not thie highest end, but I cant fathom shelling out
more than 300-400 USD for a vid-card.

Okay, where does one start with optimizing the graphics, other than
'Settings - HQ'? I read (and learn lots) here but many of you reference
custom configs that I assume are somehow invoked, apparently setting dflt
behaviours you prefer. Same stuff for graphics? Samples willing to share?
Other specific URLs or pointers?

Thanks in Advance ... No, Really!
