Excuse me dude, but Qtest was unfinished also. That did not stop ID from plopping that down. Lanuel L Staten <sta...@writeme.com> [ICQ# 6905934] http://people.we.mediaone.net/staten

That was almost 3 years ago tho, a lot of things have changed in the meantime, especially expectations - and quite deservedly so considering the advancements in graphics peripherals. This 'leaked' Q3 thing is utter shite and for me only serves to demean the game, the initial visuals are cartoonish and the liquid textures are bland to say the least. Sure there are a few nice things in there like the mirror but there's nothing that really justifies the hype and tbh I think Q2 looks better. It doesn't even begin to encroach on Unreal territory for graphical splendour. However, it *is* only a test version and wasn't meant to be seen so not many conclusions can be drawn from it. I'd estimate it's quite old as well (2 months at least ?) so personally I'll reserve my judgement for the final official release.

You have a RIVA128 or a Voodoo1 or something? Man, the room with the tongue is simply stunning. It looks very promising! Han

Nope, actually I have Voodoo2 in SLi and ran it in 1024x768 if you must know :) Sure, the pulsating tongue was nice (fnaar fnaar) but there was nothing else that particularly stood out. Take the liquid textures for instance, they were bland and un-inspiring compared to the liquid effects of Unreal. I assume this may be because it was an old version tho. The cartoonish bit I refer to is the initial view when you start KM_PORTAL. The revolving picture *does* looks awesome when you get close to it (looks better than the actual tongue room itself). The HUD and accompanying text also seem extremely childish. And before anyone say's it, I am not "an Unreal gamer defending his territory", I am a Quake 1/2 player and always have been. I know Q3A is going to be big, I just don't think (hope) that beta should be particularly used to judge the final game.

And why would id need to do that? The only REAL competition they have is Valve. All the other "developers" are releasing games which aren't even close to finished (for example(s) - Sin, Falcon4.0, Rainbow 6, Unreal (although the last was pretty good)). And then when you get the "patches" you have to download 30Meg just to get a slight improvement. id don't need to keep interest. They make great games. They are the benchmark to which all other of the Action genre are measured. If you're not interested in their games, you're not playing the genre. (Mind you having to restart your game after every upgrade does tick me off a little) SS. IMHO qtest had the scariest pain sounds.... made you want to turn the volume down :-) afaik, the nailgun looked like a machinegun and had a really crap model and sound
