Does id games give away q3 for linux for free when its released?

I guess not. Quake2 for Linux is for example not free. You will
get only the Linux-Binaries from id-Software. You have to
get all the other essential files from your own Quake2 CDROM
that you bought in a shop.

Linux is just the OS. Extra software do still cost money,
altough there are lots of tools/demo versions for free.

But maybe there will be a beta-test version or a
shareware version like Quake1.

But I have read that all software developed for linux can be
sold or free distributed? (according to a "law")

Far from true.  The only free software for linux is that falls under GPL
licensing, OSS, or is simply freeware.  Follow to http://www.gnu.org for
further reading.

OK, got the clue now. Buy the Q3 and get the binay files  for Linux.
