Q3 DM tech-question - please help

I cant start a Deathmatch server.

Ive heard that the only way is with a bat-file (i.e. Quake3 +deathmatch 1 +
map xxx).  But when i run the bat, it gives the dreaded gl-subsystem not
found.

To get Q3 going I have to start with quake3.exe and then go to the setup of
visuals before I start a game. (I dont have to change my video settings at
all - just go the menu and press escape to go back)

Why do I have to go to video-setup before running a map to get Q3 to detect
my gl-subsystem ??
