I agree it's probably leftover testing.  Note there's also an area next 
to the "cavern" which involves a small platform (with ambient sounds of 
war nearby) where there's some spent brass, a flare, and a marine's 
helmet.  Next to that (but you can't get there by walking) is a corridor 
with a door.  Neither are accessible from the _Hannibal_ interior or the 
cavern with the walker; you have to noclip around.
