Boy we need an updated FAQ

This has been posted over and over again and it is getting old quick.
Just a few posts up is the same complaint and several replies. It is a
good idea to read some posts before asking a question. Try searching
the NG for "Invalid cd key". There are several.

Here is what whatever had to say to several of them

"Solution 1:

Edit your hosts file and add the following to it:

192.246.40.56 authorize.quake3arena.com

http://www.accs-net.com/hosts/how_to_use_hosts.html

Solution 2:

"Why do I sometimes get messages saying "Invalid cdkey", "Mistyped
cdkey?" and/or "Client Unknown to Auth"?

These messages are not PB-related issues. They have to do with your
cdkey and id Software's cdkey authorization server. Some players
report that deleting the q3key file from the various folders where the
game is installed will fix the problem after they re-enter their cdkey
one more time. Others say that connecting to servers inside the game
instead of using an external game browser such as GameSpy or
All-Seeing-Eye will fix the problem."

Solution 3:

"Why am I getting kicked for PB Guid Auth: UNKN?

The "PB GUID AUTH: UNKN" kicking means that your Game client is not
sending a valid cdkey to id's cdkey auth server. Usually this is due
to a problem with your cdkey entry. Exit Quake3 and then use your
Windows explorer program to find the baseq3 folder where Quake3 is
installed on your system and delete the file called q3key. Launch
Quake3 directly and before you get to the game's main menu, it should
ask you to enter your cdkey. Be sure to enter the 16 character cdkey
from your Quake3 cd-case in all lower case letters. NOTE: If your
cdkey has 18 characters, then you are not finding the right key. Team
Arena keys have 18 characters, Quake3 keys have 16. If this does not
fix the problem, then perhaps there is some type of firewall or
security software blocking your game's communication to id's cdkey
auth server. Be sure that UDP port 27952 is open for clear
communication if you have a firewall or some type of security
software."

For the protocols, those are different versions of the game. If you
have Q3 version 1.32 that is protocol 68 and you can only play and
1.32 servers.

ASE gives you all the information on the server in the bottom right
window. You can see the protocol and server version.
