Problems with the pbcl.so file getting hosed joining a server prevents PB from getting enabled, even if set from the command line or autoexec.cfg on the next connection. I manually downloaded an update of the latest version of PB, stuck it in a separate folder, and just added "cp /otherfolder/pb/pbcl.so .q3a/pb" to the beginning of my q3-run script, which simply copies the good file over the one that gets hosed in your ~/.q3a directory. Take a look inside of ~/.q3a/pb and see if the pbcl.so file is now 0 bytes, it should be 596.7 KB. http://forum.evenbalance.com/forum/index.php?act=ST&f=32&t=1694&s=5b5ea38548f2f1a50b1e1744f3f274fb copy and paste above url if it breaks....
