I was reading in a magazine today and they rated it and gave the release date....It said first quarter '98. I have heard that it should come out before that. So when is the real release date? My other question is, will the Pure3d card be good enough to use for quake 2? Thanks to whoever responds. -- Scott Croom akan...@juno.com

My guess is that Id will try and make the Christmas rush to get some good fast return right out of the gate. It'd be my humble opinion they'd be nuts if they didn't but who knows.. maybe they've hit a snag or two that will prevent putting a tight product out on time. I wouldn't mind waiting a few more months if it meant not having a piece of junk. :-) I'm curious too what some good hardware would be to take full advantage of Quake 2.. I've been thinking about buying a Diamond Monster 3D card. I already have a Dell PPro/180 with 64 megs of RAM and a S3 Virge PCI card w/ i think 2 megs of VRAM. Thoughts, anyone? I'd like to keep the upgrade costs below $500 -- Reuben King, another Bitter Little Bastard(tm) (CASHP #18-97) To respond via email: Remove "REMOVETHIS" from above email or: "reuben[at]texas[dot]net" (Clealy sir, spam-bots suck.)

First of all, if you read blues news ( http://bluesnews.com/ )on a daily
basis, you'd see that the column about the release date for 98' (I bet
you read that in Next Generation =-) was a goof-up. Quake2 WILL be
released before January. Come hell or high water =-)
As for the hardware questions, the Monster3d will rock on Quake2, and
the Pure3d will be just downright sublime, with 4 megs of dedicated
texture memory and 2 megs of frame buffer, the Pure3d will SCREAM!!
Both cards will cost about $200 each, a very worthwhile investment.
Its of course recommended to have atleast 32 megs of ram which should
run just fine ( i still want to upgrade to 64 though, lucky bastard!).
And ANY Intel Pentium based chipset of atleast 100Mhz should run pretty
smooth, but of course its recommended to have atleast a 150 or 200.
Thats the facts....enjoy =-)

I would personally recommend ditching your PPro. They aren't bad, but you could do better. Wait another month or two before gettin a new CPU. I am sure the prices will keep droppin. Correct me if I am wrong, but you can get a MMX 200 for around $250 now. Not a bad deal, but make sure your motherboard can handle it. You're crazy! My PPro 180 machine tears stuff up! It has at least 2 or 3 years left in it before it starts warranting being ditched. Hey try overclocking the thing to 233mhz. A friend of mine has one and it tears things up even better.
