im thinking of upgrading my current modem a standard 28.8k to a 56.6k
modem. my principal motivation being a better ping time (hence less
lag), although i have heard rumourz that this isnt always the case,
has anybody else had similar experiences?
did a modem upgrade improve your ping times??

cheers,

More modem only helps if your provider can handle your new & improved
bandwith. I have a 33.6 but I never do any better than 26.4 because my
ISP doesn't do any better. I could have kept a 28.8 in there.

accually ping times aren't your greatest concern. the biggest concern is
how long it takes your server "hop" from server to server and finally your
destination. if you have windows 95' get a ms-dos window and type "tracert"
and then the sites address "10.4.56.78.34" or something like
www.myserver.com and then it will give you the server names you are
connecting to and the ping time. you should only have to "hop" about 8-10
times. if more like 15-20, find a new isp. check out cnet.com for more
speed tips. it should be on their front page.

Forget those 56K modems. Get a cable modem if you can!

This may be a good idea.. I have a 56K USRx2 and it sucks for game
play (Quake). It disconnects, stalls and generaly sucks. I't's
great for browsing and downloads but remember it is only high speed
one way my best connection is 49000. This has a lot to do with line
and switch conditions. When I want to play Quake I'll dial in to my
ISP's 33.6 lines, it much beter then the x2 . But it's no competition
for cable or ISDN.
Cheers
Michael

OK, I don't think that cable modems would support dial up TCP/IP which
is required for Quake right?
