i just formated my pc and reinstalled quake2. now i cant turn my crosshairs 
back on. when i go into options and toggle between the three different 
types, the only one that shows up is the dot. and it comes on when i turn on 
angle. but i need the cross.

Try the console commands.  See the tutorial at:
