Being the cheap bastard I am, I am very slow in deciding whether I should buy an expensive item. The Monster 3D is being considered by me, and I would like to ask if people can give their cheer/jeer or any type of review, and upcoming uses of the 3dfx chip. I would also appeciate if someone could send a genuine zipped .tga file so I can compare it to my .pcx screenshots (gotta see it to believe it). Thanks for the help, Zodiac

This is a multi-part message in MIME format. ------=_NextPart_000_01BCA46B.F533CD40 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=ISO-8859-1 Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit with the new chips comming out it isn't a good idea to buy an older piece of equipment without being a heavy gamer. but if you want a good card with a good chip in it (the best you can get for 100 bucks) then go ahead and buy the monster. or for some more money by a hercules 128/3d with the 3dfx chip in dere. that is good too but it is a complete replacement. Any ideas?

I really wanted to like it BUT it had the annoying habit of degrading the display. I would get these large vertical waves of distortion from the left side to around the middle of the screen. This was only visible when running software that used the 3d chip. I tried hooking the monitor straight to the 3d card, changing the bus slot, and moving other cards but nothing helped. Guess I got a defective one or something. Anyway, I took it back. I might try again with an Orchid card. GLQuake bothered me anyway. It seemed slower and the rocketry lighting was cool but distracting Ya, that's it. I didn't like any of that 3d stuff ;) J.C. Stofer sto...@REMOVETHIS.mindspring.com

OK. Yes, GLQuake is opengl. And yes, 3Dfx is the best chipset (at the moment) for running GLQuake. But, there are other ports of Quake for other cards, like VQuake for Verite based cards. But still, it does not mean that it is better. In a few months, there will be a whole new slew of cards out that can run GLQuake, but more than likely they are all based on the 3Dfx chipset. In fact, there are new cards in the works based on the on the 3Dfx chipset that have more texture memory, 2 megs more to be exact, resulting in... Let me here it... MORE POWER!!!! Not only is there gonna be more memory, but from what I understand, the mem chips will be faster.
