Well, duh :)

You change to an OS with a *lot* more background priority tasks and you
wonder why things start to get jerky? :)

My tip: go back to Windows95, or better still, use Win98Lite (see
http://www.win98lite.net) - it builds a core OS kernel around your
choice of Win98/98SE/ME, and then adds the Win95 Explorer. No IE4/5
based Desktop, because that is the real performance killer and source of
the majority of OS problems. For browsing, its up to you to add a non-MS
browser, such as Netscape Communicator or, better still, Opera.

Another good thing to do is to fill your machine with as much physical
RAM as possible, and *disable* Virtual Memory (Windows will complain
bitterly about this, but it will continue to function - you'll just be
limited to the amount of software you can keep running concurrently).

I've a crusty P200 here with 98Lite running on it (and no VM), and it's
silky and solid as - no crashes, blue-screens or lock-ups in over 18
months, and the only regular maintenance I've had to do is a little bit
of defragmentation.
