OpenGL is a non-proprietry industry standard for high-performance
graphic display, and is available on many platforms. Microsoft's
Direct3D is a heavy plagiarisation of OpenGL.

In short, OpenGL is a standardised library of routines that software
(such as games) can use to talk to a 3D video card that has had an
OpenGL driver library written for it. Like Direct3D, the idea is to
provide to the software makers an uniform, standardised way of
communicating with specialised hardware without the need for lots and
lots of individual card drivers.
