A "Raid array" is multiple hdds (two or more) on a controller card, (or in software via NT)... There are different way to build an array... Mirror is the most common as it's basically two drives with one being an exact copy of the other... It's mainly used for servers... That way if one drive fails, it will use the other one without so much as a hitch, and you can just plop a new drive in, and the server never stops for downtime. The other type of array (the one I use) is known as "Stripe" . It basically takes two (or more) drives, and splits the data sent to them up, thereby doubling the performance of one drive. The drives show up in your OS as one large drive... thus two 20 gig drives look like one 40 gig drive in explorer. I use a Promise FastTrak PCI bus mastering controller card for this feat... here is the website: www.promise.com Video editing is extremely demanding on HDD performance, and size... It takes a very...very fast HDD to capture video with some video cards... My Miro DC30+ can transfer data as fast as 7mb/sec *sustained* to the HDD... That may not seem like much, but I tried it with only one of my 20 gig 7,200 rpm drives just to test it, and I got dropped frames in the video.... The drive couldn't keep up!... But _two_ drives on the FastTrak can take all I can throw at them... I had a 10,000 rpm UW scsi drive about a year ago, and on large capture sessions (as it got hot I suppose)even it would drop a frame here and there.... Not so on my Raid array. I hope this helps!
