No, that's the last part of the name. When I go to post a message to a
newsgroup, or subscribe to a newsgroup, my newsreader gives me a short
description of each newsgroup I am posting to or subscribing to. For
git.talk.quake, it goes something like:
Discussion of Id's game, Quake; GT
As a further example, here follows the descriptions for all the non-alt.*
NG's this is going to:
rec.games.computer.quake.misc General discussion of Quake.
rec.games.computer.quake.playing Playing Quake and user-created levels.
rec.games.computer.quake.quake-c Modifying Quake with Quake-C.
rec.games.computer.quake.servers Setup and maintenance of servers.
That's not something special about my newsreader; the description is tied
to the newsgroup.
For those of you who
>haven't memorized the three letter abbreviations for all the educational

Not very imaginative.
But, lets just say you ran across a git.* ng in your feed. Most
reasonable people would wonder what the hell the heirarchy is for, and
would make some attempt to find out before posting to it.

Yes, something very similar.

except for the small, inconvinient fact that what I wrote was, and
continues to be, the truth.

see the above discussion of git.talk.quake's description.

Which continues to have nothing to do with the newsgroup's descriotion.

Well, most people would look at the description as I said above. I can
see how your limited intelligence might make this difficult, but such is
life. There's also the cardinal rule of usenet common sense: don't post
to a newsgroup you don't read and aren't familiar with.
Since this started with Unholy's post, let's consider it. He posted to 9
newsgroups by your count. Do you think he reads all 9? I rather doubt
it; I don't read 9 newsgroups total, much less 9 related to quake. But,
lets just assume he might. It's seems reasonable to assume that he
doesn't read the servers group, since we both agree he shouldn't have
posted there. I will suggest that he also doesn't/didn't read and is/was
not familiar with git.talk.quake. If he were familiar with that group, he
would have known that it was set up for Tech students, and that his post
would therefore be unwanted.

I have made no attempts to decieve anyone. I merely stated an oppinion:
that it was interesting. I found it interesting that, depending on which
was convinient at the moment, you either didn't frequent g.t.q, or you had
been subscribed for a long time.
>Subscribe does not mean frequent
"Subscribed for a long time" and "don't frequent" do not necessarily
contradict each other. But most rational people don't subscribe to
newsgroups for a long time if they don't frequent them. I made the
mistake of assuming you were rational, and for that I appologize.

In which case you would be mistaken, yet again.

That doesn't change the fact that you said it was posted to g.t.q, only.
It was not. It was also posted to r.g.c.q.quake-c, and who knows where
else, but probably some of the other groups you read. On the other hand,
I'm pretty sure I've seen quite a few posts from you on r.g.c.q.quake-c.
It seems to me then that you were probably aware that the post in question
wasn't only posted to git.talk.quake. So, who's trying to decieve who?
THe only difference between x-posting and multiposting is one takes
more work and bandwidth. It doesn't change the fact that the post went to
more than one newsgroup.
>Therefore, any fool who reads git.talk.quake only
That would be you.

Because we, the Tech students, know it. The spammers don't read the
group, so why bother telling them. The non-Tech student posts that aren't
spam or x-posted out the ass are rare (If I recall correctly, the
modem-to-modem post was x-posted as well. I may be mistaken though). But,
we get tired of the spam. Unholy's post finally set Gary off. He
appologized later for having x-posted the flame. Then your stupid ass
jumps in. We are only explicitely telling you now that that group is set
up for Tech students, because there wasn't any real need to before your
sorry ass came along.

Indeed, it is. Unholy shouldn't have posted to our newsgroup. What's the
problem with that? While I'm thinking of it, neither should you.

No attempt at deception. Rather, I felt compelled to call you a shmuck.
"If you come back, I shall taunt you a second time" or something like
that.

I thought it was a reasonably good joke. If you got it, and yes I saw
were you said you got the joke, then you shouldn't have asked about stooge
and earthquakes. Either you are a shmuck who didn't understand the joke
as well as you thought you did. Or your a shmuck for such a dismally
failed attempt at humor. Either way, your a shmuck, shmuck.

No, most of the people who flamed him are still at Tech and still read
git.talk.quake. It's just that we're not so focused on the past.
Incidently, you've yet to show any dishonesty on my part.

You can scroll back up to see where I addressed the matter of us ignoring
spam and x-posts, instead of educating them.

It wasn't necessary until you flamed him for his appology. He flamed
Unholy, and rightly so. But, he hadn't intended to x-post it to all
those newsgroups. He appologized, and you started flaming him. That's
when it became necessary to inform your patheticly underdeveloped mind
that git.talk.quake is for Tech students.

As far as pointers, etc; ther is the group's description that I mentioned
above. The fact that, as you say, "None what so ever has been found"
indicates a deficiency in your attempts to find it. Not an abscence.
As far as whether Unholy did anything wrong: ignoring the group's
description for a moment, bear in mind that it's bad form to post t a
group until you are familiar with the group. Had unholy bothered to
familiarize himself with the group and then had the consideration to give
a damn about it either way, then he would have known that that kind of
post was unwelcome. Hell, a crossposted message that went to 9 newsgroups
where it's rather appearant that the poster isn't familiar with the
groups, is unwelcome in just about any newsgroup it'll go to.
>You
>have nobody to blame and nobody to flame but yourselves.
Or unholy.

I can't help but believe that you're refering to the name. The
description tells you that it is a GT newsgroup.
>Out of the blue, a flame from a cheater (Gary) was posted
>for no apparent reason.
Then perhaps you should have addressed his flame, and asked why
Unholy should not have posted to git.talk.quake, or pointed out that
many people don't realize that git.talk.quake is set up for Tech students.
Instead you flame his appology.

Flood? Either one of us doesn't understand how newsgroups work (and I
don't think it's me) or this is "another attempt to decieve."
If I'm not mistaken, Newsgroups don't "flood" news servers. The servers
admin's decide if they wish to carry a certain group. If they don't whish
to carry a group's feed, then it doesn't do anything to their newsserver.
>but not a single FAQ found detailing any restrictions? Does this FAQ
>even exist?
>Do we have to search all 300+ newsgroup to find one single FAQ file?
>Again, I ask, does it even exist?
OK, assuming your server carries git.*, and you're not intelligent enough
to read the descriptions of groups you are curios about, nor are you
intelligent enough to read a group for a while to figure out what's going
on (if you can subscribe to it), then, if all else has failed, you could
ask somebody what git stands for and just what the hell is up with all
these post coming from Tech students. THat's why FAQ's are called FAQ's:
because people ask those questions. Frequently, in fact.

And you should read my FAQ on sigs-o-spam. In it, I define a sig-o-spam
as a sig that is incredibly long and contains an annoying advertisement
for the author's pet project.
