Hexen Clock Pieces problem

I am in the castle of grief. I have put in all of the clock pieces,
but one. I found the last one (in the circular area that shoots at
you on a ledge). The last recepticle won't take the piece. All of
the others are in place. I am using the use key, like with the gems
and I have tried strafing back and forth in front of it while trying
to insert it.
Just for the heck of it I used the sherlock command (after I saved my
game) and it worked fine, and gave me a message that a platform had
lowered in the tower, or somesuch.
I don't want all the items sherlock gives me. I don't want to cheat.
Does anyone have any idea of whether this is a glitch, or is there an
extra piece for the clock, one more than there are slots?? Or am I
just missing something???
Help would be appreciated.

Hit em all and go the the circle room. The top wall will fall revealing the last piece. Well pieces don't go away when you get them like keys. I think in single play. If so you used a piece and got the same piece again. Correct? Go hit those switches. The hardest nook is on the bottom left side of the castle. Looks like a shallow nook but opens up. If you think you're really screwed just forget it and stand in the center of the multi-trap and wait to be turned into a pig and race back to the beggining and follow the river to the left and walk under the wall to a teleporter. That'll take you ahead. >I am in the castle of grief. I have put in all of the clock pieces, >but one. I found the last one (in the circular area that shoots at >you on a ledge).
