I downloaded Quake from the ID site and tried to install it on a HP
Pavillion with the AMD Athlon 64 processor 3200+ running WindowsXP home
edition.

When I try to start Quake, I get the splash screen for a split second
before the game shuts down.

Can someone help me get Quake up and running?

If you are talking about Quake (I), you will need either WinQuake or GLQuake
(or FuhQuake or some other modern client). The original Quake was a DOS
program that won't generally run on Windows.

You might want to try this:

ftp://ftp.yi.se/pub/software/equake/

I'd suggest the full client install.

Thanks Matt,

This proved to be exactly what I needed. Excellent!
