Quake on winxp?

Hi guys,
Apologies if this is a much repeated question, but is there a way
to get Quake working with win xp?

I tried installing it, but I just get a quick glimpse of the installation
image and then it quits.

I've only just got the pc so I have a lot to learn about compatibility
tricks and so on.

Very grateful for any advice. Cheers.

does it install ok, some have problems with quakes dos installer on 2k and XP

if it did install ok try winquake or gluake (if you have a 3dcard that supports
opengl)
both are free.
try quakeworld if you want to play quake online (also free)

No, when I try to install I just see a small picture on screen for a
fraction of a second and then I'm staring at the windows screen.

It a Gforce Ti with 64 megs I believe.

Thanks James, but will this enable it to actually install? Or is a
different installation entirely? I need to have a look at the webpage,
don't I? :)

Hmmmmmmmm...... been there, and I'm not much wiser, I think I still need a
method of actually installing Quake on to the hard drive. :-/

I'm not clear on the openGL aspects but I've got a G-force 4 Ti 64mb card.

Thanks for replying.

if your xp drive is fat32 try a win98 boot disk and install quake from dos
you can get a w98boot disk from www.bootdisk.com

if you have a lan and a win98box try installing on a win98 box on your lan and
copy across

the quake install files used to be in LHA format which from memory
winzip will open you could also try winzip to extract the files.

gforce supports opengl so you'll be able to use glquake and glquakeworld
(glqwcl) don't let either install opengl32.dll as it's a mini opengl driver for
3dfx based cards only.

oh and check if you have a quake/id1 directory with pak0.pak and pak1.pak
that'll give you some idea if you have quake installed or not

I actually tried that before but it threw up some error - I think.

LHA! You're talking my language now, that's Amiga stuff. No, I think its
ICE or something.

But anyway, I've managed to get it installed now (probably because I was
doing something daft in the first place) and I downloaded the glquake
patch.

It works! :)

But what started this is that I wanted to play multiplayer Quake with my
son using the pc while I staggered around like a drunk on the Amiga,
connected by serial link.

On my Amiga version of the game it has TCP, modem and serial multiplayer
options. The pc appears to only offer TCP, is that right? :(

Again thanks for all your help.

modem, serial play was dropped from winquake/glquake

ice is the name of the quake dos unpacker but it's still LHA format

Is it possible to persuade Windows to run a TCP/IP connection over a
serial link? I seem to remember doing something along these lines on
Win95, using the "Direct Cable Connection" stuff. I'm not sure
whether the Amiga will be able to decipher it, though.

That wont work unless you set up a tcp/ip tunnel over the serial
connection between the amiga and the PC. Never having owned an amiga
myself and not knowing very much about them im afraid I cant help,
although I imagine someone somewhere must have done it. Probably easier
would be to purchase two ethernet cards one for the pc and one for the
amiga and just run tcp/ip over the network

i am running WinXp Pro Sp1, and i got Quake 1 to install by running the
setup under Win98 or win95 Compatibility mode (explor the CD) right click on
the files named setup.exe, and go to properties, then compatibility tab,
select wither 95 or 98 compatibility. apply, then run setup. this should
allow the instalation.

as far as actually playing it without crashing, i got it to stop crashing on
my Radeon 8500 newest drivers, by placing all OpenGL and D3D sliders to
Default settings in Advanced. it may or may not be the same for Nvidia
cards, i dont know cause i dont have one.

you may also need the fix called " VDMSound-2.0.4-WinNT-i386.msi ", along
with the recent patches, WinQuake and GLQuake.

i personally use Tenebrae Quake (it runs quake 1 with Doom 3 grafix and
algorithems)

Hope this helps

Argh! How? I still can't get quake to install on XP. I'm seeing the same
problem you saw.

Should be. That's how modems work. SLIP = serial link IP. Winsock sounds
familiar. Search the net for it. I'm only guessing here. Its been a while
since I've had to hack a POS MS OS from that far back.

Been there, done that. Still get some window that pops up for a fraction of
a sec and goes away. I'm not sure if quake didn't install (I do have a
C:\QUAKE_SW\ID1\pak0.pak file) or if this is quake trying to run.

Its the shareware install. I have a key to install the registered stuff if I
can ever make it run to prompt me for a key.
