Creating QUAKE newsgroups!

Greetings, fellow DOOMers (or people interested in similar games)!

As most of you should know by now, the makers of DOOM will probably have
another smash hit with QUAKE. There is already a newsgroup in which
people talk about QUAKE: alt.games.quake. Unfortunately, this newsgroup
does not have a good propagation (not many sites get it) and one newsgroup
will certainly not be sufficient for handling the expected flood of
articles that will be posted when QUAKE is released.

Several people have proposed to create some newsgroups for QUAKE,
preferably in the rec.* hierarchy in order to get a better propagation.
Since this process will take some time (RFD, CFV, votes, etc.), it is
better to start as soon as possible. A mailing list has been created
for the purpose of discussing the creation of these newsgroups. The
address of the list is:

   quake-p...@montefiore.ulg.ac.be

If you are interested in this and you want to subscribe to this list,
please send a message with the word "subscribe" in the subject or in
the body to:

   quake-propo...@montefiore.ulg.ac.be

Please note that this mailing list is for discussing the creation of
QUAKE newsgroups, not the game itself. General discussion about the
game will be done on the newsgroups, when they are created! On this
mailing list, we will discuss the group creation process, choose the
best names for the groups and eventually write a formal RFD that will
be posted in news.groups, news.announce.newgroups, etc.

If you are not interested in this, then you should not subscribe. No
info about QUAKE will be posted on the mailing list.

When you subscribe to the list, you will receive a welcome message
which will tell you more about the mailing list, how to unsubscribe
and how to use the archive server. It would be wise to keep this
message for future reference.

The discussion about the creation of the Quake groups will of course be
conducted inside Usenet. Specifically, a formal Request For Discussion
(RFD) will be posted in all Doom- and Quake-related groups as well as in
news.groups and news.announce.newgroups. The discussion itself will take
place in news.groups. This is the usual way to discuss the creation of a
new Usenet group.

But the first thing to do is to decide which groups we need and write
that RFD. This is the purpose of the mailing list. By having a first
discussion on a mailing list, we will hopefully come up with a better
RFD than if all preliminary issues had been discussed here. Furthermore,
this will reduce the off-topic traffic in the Doom newsgroups.

So if you want to help and give your opinions about what should be in the
RFD, please subscribe to the mailing list by sending a message with the
word "subscribe" in the subject or body, to the following address:
quake-propo...@montefiore.ulg.ac.be (you will get a welcome message
with more information, as soon as you are added to the list).
