Many 486's are running successful small companies. I doubt if Quake requires a pentium or not will change this fact. Combine a strong 486 with Linux and you perform many operations like an expensive workstation. A machines ability, speed and status reflect the abilties of it's owner. Just because a 486 performs like a Yugo for you doesn't mean it won't do the job for someone who knows what they're doing. Dave

Actually, I've noticed that my 486DX40 outperforms some DX2/66 machines.
Three cheers for a well-designed machine. =)

This is a games group, and we're talking about games. It's a reality that to play the latest games, you need the latest computing power. There are very small niche markets that require you to upgrade as much as the entertainment biz does.

Maybe for Motherboard intensive tasks, but my DX2/66 will kick your DX40 when
it comes to counting to 1,000,000. So there. ;)

If their computers does everything but run a few games, most people won't upgrade. In fact, I'm sure you've read the hype about ~500 dollar computers that will be used mostly for these basic tasks with the internet being the central function. I must admit, I have upgraded to a P100 system, but that doesn't mean I agree that 486's should be "Yugo" status. (My Dad is still amazingly happy with his 286) All ID will do is cut it's own market share if they design a game that requires most people to upgrade. There are many of us that upgraded that want the software we buy to use all the new power (but not an inch more, of course). But why should ID cut it's profits for us? Dave

I'm poking fun at the dorks who claim "Nothing will ever be faster than my 486/100!" Btw, I'm 23 and I work as a graphics consultant at a Fortune 500 pharmaceutical/medical supply company. It's pretty good money, so I can afford to sink $300-400 into my computer every few months. I don't think I'm cooler than a 486 owner, just wealthier. Luke

Like that Dan Merillat guy claiming that his 486DX50 *ISA* beats any Pentium 75 to 100 Mhz in "graphics intensive games." That's pretty funny. Luke

Well that wouldn't be tough :) I think it's more self-restraint (Khorne) than maturity. Of course self-restraint is a part of maturity...
