I don't have a problem with the teachings of Buddhism, Islam, Christianity, Hinduism, Judaism, or any religion that promotes peace, goodwill, and moral, ethical behavior as a way to a better life, displayed together in the same place. Most of the teachings of those religions, as far as proper conduct and morality go, pretty much coincide with each other anyway -- alot of one's "way" can be found in the "way" of another. And really, the only way they differ from each other is through their own individual beliefs in the Supreme Being and the afterlife. You could take religious experts and scholars or whatever, or even just regular Joes and concerned parents, and have them study the seperate religions, find the common denominators of proper ethical standards amongst them all, and promote those as a non-denominational, "non-religious" moral code, to satisfy the dumb-asses that have something against religion. You might end up with something like this: Do not murder. Do not steal. Take care of yourself and your body. Respect your parents and elders. Respect your and others' children. Obey the law. Don't be promiscuous. Study effectively and educate yourself. Respect others' religions and beliefs. Support a government by the people, for the people, and accountable to the people. Be clean and neat. Don't do to others what you would not want done to yourself. Don't use drugs. Be responsible in your work and what you do. Respect others' property. etc...etc... Leave God, Yahweh, Krishna, and all the rest out of it if you want to. Just don't deny people their right to their own beliefs and religion as a source of hope and guidance, because most people are religious and have some form of belief in the spiritual side of life. You could actually view the factual statistics of SAT scores, violence & crime in schools (and even society), widespread drug-abuse, dropping out, teen pregnancy, etc.., plot them on a timeline in this century for this country, then note at which decade/year those statistics started to worsen. You will note that they started to worsen, coincidentally or otherwise, after the approximate times that religion was removed from the schools. Previously, test scores had actually been on the rise, and crime, et al, were virtually non-existant. I'm not going to come across and say that no religion/prayer in shools is the cause of all of this, but removing it evidently hasn't helped and has most likely accelerated the decline. -- -- John Wolanski email: jpw AT columbus DOT rr DOT com Support mental health.
