Fuhquake vs. JoeQuake and custom maps

I'm an old time player of Quake 1 and I just loaded it again after many 
years (along with Scourge, etc.).  My buddy and I have just started to link 
up again using Fuhquake, and it plays the old DM matches fine.  However, 
I've tried everything I can think of to correctly load custom maps we used 
to play (bsp files) and nothing works in Fuhquake (i put 'em in 
quake/id1/maps, or under qw/maps, etc etc, doesn't help).

However, JoeQuake I discovered today WILL play these maps, but frankly I 
would love to use Fuhquake instead.  Any suggestions or is this just 
impossible to do?  I'm a newbie again after all this time so my knowledge is 
very limited about what's out there now, 10 years down the line from my 
fragging days.  Any help is appreciated.
