Quake 1 & Windows XP SP2

When trying to run Quake using the Win95 or Win98 compatibility mode I
get the errors:

	Unable to link to KERNEL32.DLL
	Cannot load WDIRxxF.DLL

Running Quake in WinXP SP2 crashes often for me.  Any way of fixing
this?
