Many old games won't run because of sound issues. I don't know if it will work with Quake but you can try VDMSound. It is a great utililty that emulates a sound blaster compatible dos card and then pipes it out whatever sound card you actually have. It was designed specially for NT, 2000 and XP and has worked wonderfully on a lot of old games I have. Do a search on google and it should come right up.
