I don't underestimate id's ability to make an awesome game. I'm just saying
that Parallax has a head start. Let's say id and Parallax were both sitting
around trying to come up with a new game by this December. And let's say
that Parallax was listening in on Id's conversation:
Id: We'll make it a full 3d world!
Parallax: We've done that
Id: There'll be no sprites!
Parallax: Well, we got rid of sprites for enemies at least
Id: People will be able to join and leave network games already in progress!
Parallax: Done that.
Id: When you kill someone, you will get to pick up his inventory!
Parallax: Been there.
Id: There will be awesome lighting and sound effects that could be used
with VR equipment!
Parallax: Done it.
Id: The players will have full motion of limbs!
Parallax: Ok, so that might be some work.
Id: It'll feel like you're really in a virtual world, and the creative
possibilities for gameplay are endless!
Parallax: Well, we'll just have to see who's more creative!
Of course, I don't even know if Parallax is designing a new game in the first
place. But if they are, then it'll be a good challenge to Quake. Remember,
when the Atari came out in the early 80's, it was the king of the video
game world. Where's Atari now? I don't think id will necessarily follow
the same fate, but just because they did it first doesn't mean they'll
always be the best.
