Well, when I heard the news that Quake was only going to have hammers, I was disappointed. But when I really thought about it, if the hammer was versatile enough, then it could make up for the lack of weapons. It could:

- Be used as a normal hammer to pound and smash from many directions ( Instead of just swinging one way, the same time every time, you could do an underhanded swing towards the chest, knocking someone high up into the air using your god strength, swing overhead to pound their head into a bloody pulp, or even swing for their low for their legs to knock them off their feet. Since the enemies react according to where you hit them, This would be possible.)

- Be used as a throwing hammer. This would be cool. You could throw your hammer at an unsuspecting victim and watch it hit them upside the head. The hammer could return to you magically or you could pick it up off the ground every time you use it. I think the former would be much cooler.

- Be used to cast spellls of some sort, like thunder that would shake the area around you and knock your enemies off their feet, while you jump on them and pound with your hammer. Or there could be the ever-famous lightning ( You are a Thor-like god, anyway), but nothing like the familiars someone mentioned before. That would get too complex.

Well, those are three things that would make the hammer a lot cooler, IMHO.
At this stage in development, as John Romero said, they could throw out all of their ideas for development and start over, so I'm not sure if the idea of one versatile weapon is here to stay (it is very likely, though)

I don't think Quake will be the 3d version of a MUD that everyone was hoping it to be, but I do think that is the next step up from Quake.

Well, if anyone else has any suggestions for the hammer, please share it with the rest of us.
