I think Quake should be more than just a game, I think it should be a 'shell' as well, think about it, what if all Quake servers were connected in the same way, using the same world. Each object would have its own 'server' owner. You could not only shoot and kill things, but you could receive email, browse the web, read news, etc. You could walk up to a terminal and use it as you would your own (not hard to do, just pipe bash to a processor that converts the ascii value to a fixed/dynamic bitmap value). You could walk into virtual microsoft (where the building is mapped to quake.microsoft.com or something), then you would shoot through a bunch of guards, and then kill Bill, yea! :) You could even walk into id and start shooting at Romero, then start running around id headquarters firing at everybody! Both John's, American, etc. You could 'warp' to a certain host and use their definitions. Hell, you could even get a visor and use X in your portable visor :) Also, I think that the client should be highly-configurable, ie, the person running the client should be able to texture map his/her face to the head of the char. model. If you think about it, this would not take up alot of overhead. Each site running a server would 'reserve' 3d-space (IDnic :). and as soon as a user crosses onto the 'owned' space, all interactions are done with the new host. If a host goes down, a big brick wall appears around the reserved space. Anyways, just my thoughts. Regards, Aaron aa...@snafu.mit.edu
