No such luck - we've still got that silly jack in the corner of our flag. Still under The Oppressive Colonial Rule. All bills passed in parliament can be vetoed by the Governer General (ie the Queen) if she so wishes. The governmenet can also be kicked out completely. Which has happenned once in the past incidentally. Having said that, it looks like Australia will succeed by 2000 for the Olympics. Or that's what they're saying - whether or not it will actually happen is another thing entirely. What's more is that the model for becoming a republic is going to be lame as all fuck. (Please excuse my French, i'm English.) The plan is to have a president, but they will have no real power, they'll just be a figurehead. Not only that, but they won't be chosen by the public - instead by either the government, or by a special council made up of government members. Huge debates raged here 8-10 months about what should be done, and noone seemed to agree. Except for all the politicians who agreed on the above. They get to choose the president, and the president can't do shit to them anyway. That gives them the freedom to do anything, because there won't be the current Queen or House of Lords to stop them. Though i notice the UK is doing a similar thing by changing the House of Lords into effectively a senate. Of course you still have the Queen with final veto. I still think the US political system kills the crap we have here and in the UK. At least the person with the final veto is chosen by the public. Shame that the public over there is so stupid :) If you read that far you're Good. While i've got the attention of at least one Brit, go to http://www.euraction.org and sign the petition to form a European constitution. Yet another great thing the Americans have which us over both the ponds suffer without. No fundamental right to freedom of speech and expression. You notice it most here in Queensland, Australia where cops can stop and search you on suspicion of drugs. Ie if you have long hair, wear fluoro clothes, have a copy of Trainspotting in your VCR, or whatever. Yeah, the Americans do have a really good political system i think. Alot of the other aspects are lacking like good social welfare, support beyond the 2 main parties and so on, but i think change starts with a good political system because that's the backbone of everything that happens in a country. Many people predict the downfall of the US in the (relatively) near future, but i would think that the US are the most likely to change for the better in the future - many other countries have got too many silly little niggles in their political systems limiting and slowing the advancement of their respective societies. If you read that far you're Really Good.
