SNES MK two cents

Well, I've been playing MK on my SNES for about a week now and I must
say that it really sucks. I too thought "how bad could the playability
really be?" And I was all excited when I popped in the cart and saw
Goro knock that Acclaim logo away. But after that it was a serious let
down.

First of all, why the hell can't you set the L button to something else
besides block? I've got joysticks and it really bothers me that I can't
set L to high punch. Why the inflexibility here?

Next, the graphics and sound are great and all...although I do miss
certain things like the clapping and applause, "flawless
victory...fatality", etc. But I do understand that this is a home
version and somethings just don't make it home...

So I selected my favorite player, Scorpion. Now the first thing I
noticed (and after playing other characters like Sub-Zero and Rayden)
was that it is really hard to do the quarter-turn motions on the
joystick (haven't tried the joypad out...I assume that its worse). I
can only do it 20% of the time which really bites. And Rayden's
teleport REALLY sucks.

The overall play of the game really sucks rocks. I love the game cuz
its MK and all, but its so slow. The computer is crazy fast, but I
can't pull off stuff as fast as it can. Even simple things like
uppercutting someone who jumpkicks straight up in front of you is near
impossible. Not to mention, you can't do Liu Kang's flying kick before
he reaches the ground, etc. There are so many things that didn't make
it into the home version and it really lacks. And half the time I can't
block after I get hit. I can't block as soon as I get hit and hold the
button down, I have to wait until I recover and then hit block.

And there are so many bugs! The first one I saw was when I was playing
my roomate two matches after we got the damn thing. He was playing Liu
Kang and I was Scorp. He beat me and Finish Him came up and he waited
and didn't do the fatality (oops..."Finishing Move") until the last
second. He then did the fatality, but before he got over to Scorpion to
uppercut him, Scorp had already fallen down (like he does when you don't
perform the fatality and let time run out once Finish Him comes up).
Next thing I know, kang is uppercutting air and then the voice comes
on..."Liu Kang wins....Liu Kang wins". It said it twice. And the bugs
keep coming.

After you do a slide with Sub Zero, if you hold the joystick back, you
don't move, you don't walk backwards. You have to let go of the
joystick and then move back. In general, it seems that you can't really
start a new move until you've finished a previous one. Either that or
its just slow.

In addition, what really bugs me is how unbalanced the characters are.
It seems everyone has almost the same effectiveness doing the basic
moves. For example, there isn't much difference in foot sweeping
speed/recovery and the same goes for uppercutting.

And DANGER. What the hell? Its my understanding that you must be at
danger and then sustain another hit before you die. On the SNES, you
can get hit, get DANGER and die all in one blow. And even when you're on
danger, you can get hit and still be alive sometimes!

Overall, I like MK and I like the fact that I can play MK at home, but I
keep thinking that the cart is like computer software ("I can't wait
until the upgrade comes out...") BUT ITS NOT! I can't believe that they
could make something so much worse than an arcade version and have it
hyped up so much. I think I'll go rent the Genesis version and be
jealous.

...and wait for MK2 to come out.

Later...
brandon.
