Some tips from a hotshot...

So I was recently in our local arcade, and I saw someone who was really
good -- he didn't really have any problems scoring near-flawless
victories all the way to the end. He said that he competed in a
New York Mortal Kombat competition and won a few hundred dollars, but
I'm not sure whether this is B.S. or not...

I'm not all that hot myself, but I noticed a few things that I really
didn't see in the FAQ, and so I thought I'd share them:

1) His favorite character was Sub Zero, and he used him artfully. He
rarely even attempted the freeze, but against the computer, he
used Sub Zero's roundhouse against the advancing opponent, occasionally
hitting the computer three times in a row (for an impressive amount
of damage -- it seems to do as much damage as a jumping kick, but doesn't
knock the opponent down). Against humans, his defense was very good
(he seemed to make a point of maintaining a constant distance from me,
so that he could counter my jumping kicks, but I eventually stopped that
by moving in slightly before jumping). For the most part, he played
a defensive Sub-Zero, occasionally striking and doing lots of damage,
   though.

2) He used Sonya, and taunted me with her flying punch. When playing against
Sonyas who like to flying punch, I usually uppercut, but he was blocking
my uppercuts in the air. I asked him how, and he showed me -- after
Sonya starts her flying punch, he blocks away while holding low punch.
This prevents throws and blocks uppercuts, although I'm sure there's
an effective alternative against this move.

While I could do about 5 rounds before, using Sub Zero and borrowing his
technique, I went up to the endurance rounds and actually won one of them.
Naturally, this is nothing compared to what some people can do, but if
you're at my level, SubZero's roundhouse may be worth trying against the
computer.
