Aglami real reason behind usenet crackdown

Earlier this week US Internet service providers Verizon, Sprint and
Time Warner Cable publicly agreed to block parts of the usenet in an
attempt to curtail access to child pornography. Today however, New York
State’s attorney general Andrew M. Cuomo involved in the deal comes
with new information that the real reason was not to curb child porn,
but to shut off access to alt.games.lucas-arts.monkey-island, a usenet
discussion group informally known as Aglami.

Aglami started off as a discussion group dedicated to the LucasArts
Entertainment Company LLC game series Monkey Island, more than
ten years ago. Yet like many other groups in the alt.* hierarchy, a
class of usenet groups with no centralized control or authority,
members of Aglami soon ventured out into a world of unprecedented
textual debauchery and mental disarray.

“You can’t help but look at this material and not be disturbed,” said
Mr. Cuomo, who had promised to take up the issue during his 2006
campaign. "I am the proud father of three beautiful children, and I
simply would not like to see them to grow up in a world where people
can just post to Aglami freely. We just can't allow them to go on with
this."

“The I.S.P.s’ point had been, ‘We’re not responsible, these are
individuals communicating with individuals, we’re not responsible,’ ”he
said, referring to Internet service providers. “Our point was that at
some point, you do bear responsibility.”

While Cuomo stressed that the procedures taken by the Internet service
providers up to this point have been entirely voluntary, other
countries seem inspired by the move and are looking at judicial ways to
efficiently remove the threat Aglami poses to society. Poland's
Minister of National Defence Bogdan Klich announced the Polish
parliament will vote on the issue next month. "Being a new member of
the European Union," he said in a recent press conference, "we would
like to express our commitment by casting Aglami into the deepest
depths of hell."
